Statement from SHARP
We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Professor Jason Arday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues, students, and all those affected by this profound loss.
This has been an incredibly difficult and emotive period, prompting important conversations about accountability, fairness, racism, mental wellbeing, and the responsibilities of institutions. At SHARP, we believe these conversations must always be conducted with respect, compassion, and a commitment to evidence rather than assumption.
As an organisation committed to promoting equality, fairness, and inclusive practice, we recognise that it is possible—and necessary—to uphold both academic integrity and the principles of equity and justice. These values are not in conflict; they reinforce one another.
We condemn all forms of racism, discrimination, harassment, and personal abuse. Equally, we support fair and independent processes that allow concerns to be examined objectively, without prejudice or trial by public opinion.
The events of recent weeks also remind us of the importance of safeguarding the wellbeing of individuals who find themselves at the centre of public scrutiny. Institutions have a responsibility to ensure that appropriate support is available while maintaining confidence in their investigative processes.
SHARP remains committed to creating spaces where difficult conversations can take place respectfully, where evidence informs decision-making, and where dignity and humanity are never lost. We hope that this tragic event encourages reflection on how we can collectively build more compassionate, accountable, and inclusive institutions.
